Chapter Thirty-Nine

Oddly, I thought this must be what a chicken without a head felt like. I started running down Fremont Street, eyes peeled for Big Jerry somewhere along the way. But by the time I reached Danny’s office, I still hadn’t spotted either one of them.

I ran up the stairs, this time managing not to scare Penny, who simply looked up at me from her desk.

“They called,” she said. “They’re down the street, near Fifth. They found something and said they’d wait for you there, near the El Cortez.”

I thanked her and ran out.

***

The El Cortez opened in nineteen forty-one. One of the oldest properties in Vegas. Bugsy Seigel and Meyer Lansky bought it in forty-five, and the Jackie Guaghan bought it in sixty-three. Gaughan owned several casinos, and it’s said that, at one point, he owned twenty-five per cent of Vegas.

I found Danny and Jerry standing right in front of the El Cortez.

“There you are,” Danny said. “I was about to send Jerry to the pay phone, again.”

“Whataya got?” I asked.

“We got word that Leo McKern might have a room in the El Cortez.”

“So what are you gonna do, search the whole hotel?” I asked.

“I thought we’d sit in the lobby and wait,” Danny said.

“And what about Gina?”

“If we catch McKern, maybe he’ll tell us where Gina is.”

“I got a better idea,” I said, and told them about the matchbook, and the Carousel.

“So you think she’s there now?” Danny asked.

“I think she could be,” I said. “I’ve got somebody watchin’, but she’s not going to be able to do anythin’ if they start to leave.”

Danny looked at the El Cortez, then down the street toward the Carousel.

“Okay,” he said, “let’s try the Carousel first.”

We headed that way, but when we came to his office he said, “Hang on. I gotta go up and get somethin’.”

He ran up the stairs and I looked at Jerry.

“I’m heeled, but he ain’t,” Jerry said. “He’s gettin’ his piece.”

“You got your forty-five?”

He grinned.

“What else?”

Danny came running back down, his gun in a holster on his belt, now. He also held out some pink slips of messages in his hand.

“Penny asked me to give you these,” he said.

I usually left contact numbers at the front desk of the Sands hotel in case I got an important call. One was my house, and one was Danny’s office. He loaned me Penny to take the messages.

“Anything important?” he asked, as I read them.

There were several, all from Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis. Apparently, Lewis’ blackmailer had called, and he was desperate to find me.

“Fuck,” I said.

“What?” Danny asked.

I told him.

“Whatayou wanna do?” he asked.

I had to choose between Gina and Jerry Lewis. I would’ve chosen Gina in a heartbeat, but if anything happened to Jerry Lewis, I’d have helluva lot of explaining to do to Jack Entratter.

So Danny decided for me.

“Look, you go back to the Sands and take care of your Jerry Lewis problem. Jerry and me, we’ll go over to the Carousel and check it out.
